Going to the ombudsman has cost me!

So I went to the energy ombudsman to complain when npower forgot to bill me for electricity for two months, slapping it all on in one go with one massive bill.

Initially I complained and Npower, who offered me £30 GW and I refused it saying it was too little compensation for such a big mistake.

I launched my complaint with the ombudsman and after the usual back and forth was offered £30 compensation and a full write down on my final bill, of £7.68. Fine I thought. I transferred away to Igloo and had done with it.

Npower have now appealed their own remedy! Saying they’ve recalculated my final bill and now believe I owe an extra £152 for a period of 14 days!

It’s getting ridiculous, they just keep asking for more and more money. And going to the ombudsman appears to have ended up costing me more than if I’d just accepted their £30 GW gesture in the first place! What can I do? The ombudsman will obviously uphold their appeal as they always do.

So you have all the required details - meter readings, tariff costs, etc so that you can do your own sums and work out if the bill is accurate? If not, that's what you need to do. If you've used the energy, you need to pay for it.

I think a £30 refund for failing to produce a bill two months running is a pretty generous offer. Now, if you hadn't been given a bill for over six months, fair enough. But we all need to keep an eye for our debts potentially building up, to set aside the money to pay them off eventually.

Not to be a jerk, but anyone who would reject that £30 and escalate it with the ombudsman doesnt deserve a good will gesture.

I really dont have any sympathy whatsoever. The person who is being ridiculous is you.

You were offered £30 but it sounds like you were being greedy and now you've paid the price.

You'd better do your own sums to see if the revised bill is correct but don't expect anymore "goodwill" payments
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • The ombudsman generally only go up to a max of £50 compensation in their decisions.

The energy industry isn't the most stable or easily navigated of businesses and so unfortunately 2 months without bills is all too common.

I appealed the appeal, got £30, plus £50 plus the write down of £7.65 and have now set up a payment plan with npower, £3/m for two years.

I posted each cheque post dated yesterday :)

So I could and did do better than £30

Did they agree to post dated cheques ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

They did, I spoke to a very understanding manager who saw my frustration.
