I must be one of those mugs then, as I have been using them for decades. Not for efficiency but because set up correctly they provide greater comfort for a day ride or a weekends touring.
Peddling for 5 to 10 hours a day you really need to be correctly positioned if you don’t want to end up with sore feet and knees. The pedals themselves are not that expensive, it’s the shoes that cost, but even if I preferred riding on flats I would still buy cycling specific shoes for the stiffer soles.
When it comes down to it it is simply a matter of choice, and the vast majority of us who ride any distance, whether it’s for racing, touring, audax, etc, choose to go clipless and to say that is because we have been brainwashed is idiotic.
