Is MSE really promoting British Gas?
Options
I should start off this thread by saying that we moved away from British Gas (dual fuel) and onto Npower a couple of years ago, purely on a cost basis as BG were getting far too expensive. Luckily, we've never had any of the administrative or customer service issues that a lot of folks on here have had, either with BG or Npower. Anyway, to the point:
A cold-calling salesman from British Gas turned up on the doorstep recently trying to get us to go back to BG, both as (a) a lost customer that they would like to get back and (b) BG were now the cheapest supplier.
He asked if I had ever heard of Martin Lewis and his website www.moneysavingexpert.com and said that I should have a look on there as even they were now promoting BG as the cheapest supplier. Of course, he tried to get me to sign up there and then but I said I'd have to do my homework first but if he was correct, then I may well go back to them.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place but I can't seem to find anything on the site here that states "British Gas is the cheapest supplier" but I do have to confess to being an absolute novice on this website so maybe it's there and I've missed it. Any pointers folks?
Cheers,
Allanon

Hi Allanon,
MSE recommends using a comparison site to find the best deal for you.
Don't you just love doorstep sellers! xGone ... or have I?0 -

Judging by some of the recent comments in other threads, it would appear so! Nothing official though, as far as I know.Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place but I can't seem to find anything on the site here that states "British Gas is the cheapest supplier"
Try looking on some of the other threads - there are indeed some people saying that very thing, very loudly, but more importantly - very wrongly!

As the risk of crossing swords again, and most certainly being pedantic;) a number of posters have stated that BG Click 4 comes out cheapest for them on the comparison networks.
A couple of minutes ago I entered my details in the MSE link to ‘energyhelpline’ as a check and guess who came out cheapest? --- BG Click Energy 4
As a matter of interest, and with reference to another thread, BG were £236 a year cheaper than Ebico for my above average consumption.
Surely the point is there is no ‘one size fits all’ answer to whom is the cheapest supplier. For a low user on a pre-payment tariff there can little doubt that Ebico would be best, but for many it would appear that BG are the cheapest.
So I really cannot see how you can justify the statement in the quote above.0 -

BG is cheapest for me, I have saved approx £100 in the past nine months compared to my previous tariff with Powergen.Gone ... or have I?0 -

No its not there, although they could be the cheapest supplier in your region. What Martin actually recommends to do can be found here

Signing up direct at the doorstep will result in loss of cashback.;)0 -
Allanon - do you have any details on the specific salesman. This is absolutely outrageous and I'd like to contact British Gas about it.
Thanks

if you do want to go to BG go via Quidco and get £60 cash back.0

I wonder if the salesman is a user on here?
Did you get a name, ID number? Or I wonder if BGas can track down who was knocking doors in that street?
Just be a word against word though.
Be nice to see an apology off BGas on here.
Just another dodgy salesman...:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
I doubt if BG can be the cheapest for gas as they are regulated not to undercut others, however this constraint does not apply to the leccy, so can really compete and Click4 is cheapest for moi. Despite having a severe customer relations problem.
And as has been mentioned they pay handsomely for using Quidco, at mo they havent yet twigged that they make the same payment to BG customers changing tariffs as to newcommers.
I've just got £40 for changing leccy from Click3 to Click 4 and though they offer £60 for dual fuel changes, if you do it one at a time you actually get 2x£40=£80for staying with them. Nice winter discount.;)
Generally best savings are made by buying gas and lec from different companies, despite dual fuel discounts Ebico is good for light users as there is no standing charge or first unit loading, so if you use 1 unit you pay around 8pac's lovechild0
