Volvo V50 keyfob has just broken

Hello.
Yesterday morning, I noticed that my keyfob was acting oddlly - it took a few goes to get the car to lock.
When I returned to the car in the evening, I was only able to unlock the key when holding the key right up to the sensor.
That was the last time the fob worked. I have tried fresh batteries and used the spare key to confirm that it is the fob that is definitely broken.
Other than get in contact with Volvo (for a ludicrously price, along with a 40 minute drive to my nearest garage for pairing to the car), is there anything else I might try first?
A bit of research has suggested that there are lots of companies that claim to be able fix keyfobs - are these worth a go?

Sometimes when you change a battery theres a procedure to resync the fob to the car, may be something in your manaual about that or it might be worth asking on a Volvo forum.0

When I lost my keycard I got a local company that sold keycards on ebay to come to my address with their laptop and they made me 2 new keycards for £100
You will need to haggle them down, the price is likely to start at much higher than £1000 -
