Audi a3

Looking for help/advice please. Purchased a 2010 Audi A3 in June 2018, 5vweeks ago had problems when starting. Now been told it could be egr valve! Have I got any rights to go back to the garage I brought from - problems started 7 months after purchase.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Doubt it. What warranty was offered?

Was it an ‘approved used’ or from an indepentant dealer.

You need to check your warranty terms

Egr valve wont prevent the car from starting mate, a bad egr could put the car in limp mode but only when the car is started and driving

take it to another garage as the first ones dont knowwhat they are doing

Its just a valve that opens and closes to allow gases to recirculate

egr and dpf can make it hard to start and like ratrace said run in limp mode. I'd say pretty much whatever problem you have with a 2010 car in 2019 7 months after purchase will not be covered by a free warrantee. 6 months would be generous, they usually offer the statutory 3 months or try and do a trade sale.

Is it a diesel? What mileage do you cover? Any hard driving done where it runs at high (over 3000rpm) revs? Any servicing done?

I can't remember exactly how but because of the fuel injected on the exhaust cycle to force a regeneration of the DP filter a few failed attempts can result in oil contamination. An oil and filter change sorts it out - just check the oil level on the dipstick, overfull and this is quick and relatively cheap fix. An oil and filter change is always worthwhile anyway.

Buying a nearly 10 year old car and expects it to be fixed after 7 months of use by the dealer you purchased it from?

I use to have the 8PA A3 2.0 TDI with mileage higher than a space rocket and it's really designed for motorway mileage. If you only ever do short journeys in the city, expect many expensive issues - turbo, injectors, DPF, EGR, catalytic converter just to name a few

Why is it the first thing people think to ask is what are my rights?

2010 car and after 7 months, this is the first problem you have had?
Why have you waited 5 weeks to get it repaired?

EGR valve can be easily cleaned and/or it is not an expensive part to replace.

You didn't have one though. When you did the custard test and the only one you ever did you later admitted it was a relatives car.

If its a 1.6 diesel its a very expensive part to replace due to the location at the back of the engine.
