Critical illness cover with pre-existing conditions

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can give me some good advice. I recently experienced a health problem that essentially leaves me with an increased risk of MS. I've since tried to get critical illness or income protection insurance as I am the main earner for my family and been told that they will not cover MS which for me really makes the cover far less useful.

I am perfectly able to work and I don't currently have any major health problems but I do want some kind of protection to my income in case the worse happens and I do get a nasty illness like MS. However I appear to be in a position where I simply cannot get cover.

My work do not provide any protection like this, just the statutory sick pay which is peanuts.

Does anyone have any idea what I could do here to get some cover against this situation or am I basically screwed? The only option I see is attempting to convince my work to get critical illness cover for the whole company myself included.

Cheers

You will find it difficult to get cover, but try a broker to see if they can.

It will likely depend on the original condition you were diagnosed with, however, since MS is one of the top 5 most commonly claimed on critical illnesses you will probably find it almost impossible to arrange long term income protection or critical illness cover if something has occurred which increases this likelihood above the population average.

That said, some short term income protection plans will only exclude pre-existing conditions for the first 12-months the plan is in force so you could get short term protection against time off due to MS. You'd want to speak to a broker who specialises in this area.
