Hi I have a similar issue. Took my car to the garage for MOT and service. Went to get the car, £570 bill. They had put on new brake shoes and brake pads without discussing it with me. So shocked, paid half the bill as not enough money. Now two months later had a reminder for rest of bill. I stupidly had hoped they might forget about it, I think! Family and friends think it's awful that I was not consulted. They have passed my dispute into their 'credit department'. I have said I will get legal advice but unsure how to proceed. Thoughts appreciated please!
You should have disputed it at the time. If you weren't happy with the amount and you didn't authorise them to do the work then I'm sure if you had discussed it, you could have worked it out. But you paid half the bill which implies you were happy with the work and the amount. They are right to chase you for the money 2 months later, especially if you have not contacted them at all since then.
I don't think you have a leg to stand on. Maybe they will let it go and not take it all the way with bailiffs or court or whatever but if you can afford to, I would pay it.
