My Tariff with British Gas is coming to and end ( All Online March 2019) and their cheapest renewal offer represents an increase of 40% above what I am paying now, its going from £1200 to £1700 approximately. Also their fixed rates for 12 month or 24 months are only £20 per year less than Standard Variable. I knew there were increases but I was shocked to see how much.

Utility suppliers estimates of future costs seem to be without foundation.

Use your actual consumption for the last months and put those figures into a comparison site.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Maybe you could turn the heating down 1 or 2 degrees, turn it off a bit earlier, some people have it on until they go to bed. Find if there are any gaps in window frames and fill them in with sealant, get draught excluders for doors.
Failing that a hot water bottle keeps the person warn and the home can be heated at a lower temperature.
Someone please tell me what money is

I left them a 18 months ago because of this, however in my case they wanted to put the tariff up by 80% - from £110 per month to £185 per month!!!

I've switched over to Avro Energy and then on to Pure Planet since then, and both have been fine.

British Gas are putting mine up as well, from £947 to £1257.

    an increase of 25%

Based on using 12949 kWh of gas and Based on using 3000 kWh of electricity.

I'm off to Bulb as I've got a referal code for £50
  • I recently left Sainsburys Energy (which is actually British Gas) for the same reason.

Once my deal ended, their best tariff would have seen my bills going from £1,600 to £2,200, which is close to a 40% increase.

My new supplier is approx £1,700.

Got the email alert too - new tariffs seem to be way more expensive...
Would like to keep the smart meter functionality as I have the 1st generation model but that is NOT worth £300+py
Will give it a few weeks and hope the MSE Energy Club here manages to negotiate something good for us...
  • Find a supplier you like and then check direct most offer pretty decent referrals which are often better than even MSE can do

You need to check all the comparison sites. My recent excellently priced 2 year dual fuel fix with EDF was only available on comparethemarket.com It wasn't available on the EDF website nor offered on any other comparison site.
