Installing an electric shower

Hi, i did a search but couldn't find anything so apologies if this has been asked a million times.

We moved into our house 2 weeks ago and it doesn't have a shower just a bath which I hate.

We are eventually going to get a new bathroom installed with a seperate showr cubicle but that is way down the list of things we need to get done list at the moment so for now I have bought a cheapy 8.5kw shower to install over the bath.

I'm waiting for a few companies to get back to me about quoting for installation but can anyone give me an idea of how much it might cost roughly?

Thanks.

Do you have the correct electricity supply to the bathroom? If not how far is it from the fuse board to the bathroom? I don't know how much it will all cost but these details will make a big difference!

  • I presume there's a sufficient electricity supply to the bathroom and the electricity metre/fuse box is about 2 metres from where we are fitting it. only other potential problem I can see is that the shower would have to go on the non tap end of the bath, however that is closer to the water tank than the tap end so maybe that wouldn't be a problem.
  • Our electric shower is at the non-tap-end and it isn't a problem at all!

here in manchester, there are peeps who advertise they will supply and fit an electric shower for 200 quid.
assuming the shower unit cost about 60 quid, then you can work out the labour part.

Why not just get a shower on a riser rail with attachment that pushes onto the bath taps and runs off your hot water supply?

In the flat where we used to live we bought this: http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500000701&langId=-1&searchTerms=8305518&x=681&y=57 £24.99 that attached to the taps. The hot water pressure was a bit low for us but that was because the shower head was the same height as the hot water tank which wasnt gravity fed.

I guarantee an electric shower plus electrician costs (Part P applies) will cost considerably more than £25. If your going to replace it all in the future anyway it makes more sense to save your money now.

Hi thanks for the suggestion but I have a on the taps shower thing just now and I just don't get on with it at all, find it impossible to get the temperature at a comfortable level. We won't be able to replace the bathroom for a good few years and a vaguely decent shower is something I just can't live without.
  • Can't get the thanks bttons to work but thanks for the help everyone. About £200ish I can deal with, it'd be worth it to be able to rinse the shampoo out of my hair properly

i've just had a shower wired in and parts and labour was £140 by a part p sparky. the wire had to go from upstairs under the floorboards to front of house and then down to fuseboard by the frontdoor and its got its own fuse thingy in it.

The sparky also put a pullcord switch in the ceiling and its next to the pullswitch for the light. The cord on the shower is a lot shorter so we know not to keep pulling it thinking its the light one!!
