Planting snowdrops in grass
Options
Know they have to be planted in the green, ie after flowering but
A) how deep
. Singly or in clumps if you want to encourage them to multiply
c). do you cover them with turf again after planting or leave the bare soil exposed. Does covering the leaves over with soil or turf before the leaves have died damage them for future blooming?

a) about the same depth (unless you bought them - in which case you wouldn't know) - make sure the bulb is covered plus around half an inch. If you can still differentiate between the brown part of the stem (below ground) and the green part of the stem (above ground) then that's your guide. I think with hand tools it's fairly difficult to plant too deep
b) I tend to do it in clumps, partly because it's easier
c) I tend to make a wide drill, drop the bulb(s) in, then firm up the ground/turf around them to protect against squirrels and/or badgers (maybe even foxes?) Badgers will wreck your efforts if you have badgers
If I'm splitting a clump, or moving them, I'll normally pull them, clean them, then hang them up and let the greenery wither before cutting the withered stems off an planting the bulb in the summer - that way I can cover with a rock to protect the bulb.
Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?0 -
Get one of those bulb planting tools from the garden centre, can pick up a cheap one for a few quid. You can just punch a whole in turf, drop the bulb in and then replace the turf plug over the top. Quick and discreet, my entire front lawn is plastered with crocus, snowdrop, daffodil and fratilery bulbs hiding quietly under the turf.0
