Weird Clarity experience in ticket machine

Not really looking for answers, but thought I'd "post for the record".

Last week I was travelling on the Taiwan High Speed Rail. This, I have done many times before and usually paid with Halifax Clarity.

I buy at the same machine. These machines do not take contactless - you put the card in the slot, the amount is shown and you type in the PIN. They refer to it as the "cash withdrawal PIN" in English, because Taiwan is not chip'n'pin - they generally sign. But it always goes through as a purchase. That's not the issue here.

This time I put the card in, and after a few seconds it was rejected and the card ejected. You had the chance to try again. My friend inserted her Taiwanese card - typed in the PIN and the tickets were dispensed.

But the transaction has gone through on my Clarity (labelled "contactless"), but not on hers....!
