Dyson DC32 stinks!

We've had a Dyson DC32 for 5-6 years.

It recently started to stink (think wet dog, well used running shoes or rank cheese).

I have:

1. Replaced the filter
2. Cleaned the hose/rigid part with the shower head and then a garden hose
3. Taken apart the canister part and knocked dirt out of it for 20-30 minutes
4. Checked that none of the tools have dirt trapped on them, removed all hair, dirt etc.

I suspect the problem coincided with introducing a cat to our house.

To my untrained nose, I think it's the hose/rigid part that smells the worst. I've checked, however, and it's c. £90 to replace these (and it might not resolve the problem).

Also, at that point I'd probably look at a new hoover, but can Ill afford this.

Any suggestions?

Time to strip it complete and wash everything in warm water with disinfectant or a drop of bleach, dont overdo the bleach it may affect the plastic.

Could be the pet smell adhering to the innards and the heat from the motor causing the smell to increase.

Dismantle and clean with a strong detergent (eg. sugar soap). There are videos on YouTube showing how to take Dyson cylinder vacuum cleaners apart. A garden pressure spray is inexpensive, and useful for pushing a detergent solution at/ into awkward places.

You could also consider getting rid of the cat!

We've had exactly the same issue - wet dog smell and have taken it apart and cleaned it and it's still there.

Yes we have a cat, but the cat was here before the Dyson and it's only started doing it - coinciding with a loss of suction....had the Dyson for about 3 years

So we'll try to dismantle it and clean it again to see if that solves both problems.

Dyson's are generally one of the easiest to maintain/repair. A place to get genuine, cheap spares is https://manchestervacs.co.uk/ I've used them before when I was doing up my old DC07 before selling it on.

Try vacuuming up Shake & Vac, or Bicarb of Soda.

Dyson engineer told me never to use the likes of shake and vac with my Dyson

I am wondering if the smell started when some liquid was sucked into the machine?

Did the Dyson engineer actually recommend this product? I am guessing in decrying the likes of Shake 'n Vac it may have been the principle of using such items that was being denied.

OP - I'd be straight onto the line to Dyson support. They need this kind of feedback, and are so [STRIKE]anal about their portfolio[/STRIKE] committed to continually improving their products they will want to get to the bottom of it / may be working in a solution already.

He recommended the stick type. But the type I use are discs
He said the powders like Shake and Vac damage the filter inside the ball and to never use them
