Question for antipodeans - would you build a sleep-out here?

Hi all,
I grew up in Australia and when I was a kid our house had a really nice sleep-out on it. A sleep out for non-Aussies and Kiwis is a covered verandah that you can open up the front on and sit out on in hot days and even sleep on if the weather is too hot indoors (from the days before air conditioning).
I wanted to have an open front with folding windows and back up screen doors so that I can have it as a garden room. Most of my neighbours have conservatories on the back of their houses but as the space is south facing and I have no other ventilation to my lounge I'm concerned that this will be a heat trap and that a sleep-out might be a better option.
Has anyone else done such a project here? If so, what would the typical cost be vs a conservatory? What type of planning do I need? Would it detract from or add to the value of my home? Am I missing the obvious and its called something else here but is really common?
Thanks everyone!!
