£30k owed

I owe £30k on 4 cards along with a £22k bank loan. I’m now not working, plus have no assets here in UK... option one move abroad and leave debts behind as have no intention of returning to UK. What will happen? I understand my credit file will be slated... but can I be chased in France or Spain to clear debt? If I don’t own anything in uk what can they do... whilst I hate what I’ve done.. I can’t pay what I don’t have so bankrupt or Iva I can’t see an option, but welcome your advice

So your going to just disappear, it doesn't paint a good picture of yourself doris.

Its possible you could get chased, why not stay and face up to the problems, get a job and pay the debts off.

Posting the same post on multiple forums is spammy behaviour.

Owing that much is an issue from what I’ve read previously they may be able to come after you if the country has an agreement with the UK. I did read that someone with a debt in Dubai was chased in the UK.

Get some advise from a debt charity.
  • Assuming these are all unsecured debts. You do not work and clearly have no intention of paying the debt. They would find it hard enough to make you pay the debt if you stayed here, they certainly are not going to waste there time chasing you abroad.

Thing is though if they have no job or no money where do they plan to live or work abroad you can’t just live on fresh air, unless they have family out there but if you’ve run that much debt up and quite flippantly run away from it then you have to pity whoever’s door they’re going to land on.
Spenders just love to spend and they don’t care who’s money it is..

    Glad it’s not mine.

The OP is here to make a mockery of desperate people who want to pay what they owe or at least find a genuine solution to their plight.

In my time living in bits of Asia, I've met people that ran away from their debts. I won't say it never works, but usually a mix of the following happens and they end up back in the UK having wasted a few years.

    1) They end up destitute because they can't get a job in the location concerned, or they can only get very low paid jobs. This tempts them into illegal activities - drugs, pimping, theft etc. I remember two British girls who worked the seafront bars of Nha Trang in Vietnam. They stole from expats/tourists who whilst worrying about local pickpockets etc., would never have believed Brits would steal from Brits. It didn't end well for them.

    2) Paperwork issues. Unable to get work permits, working on tourist visas, overstaying visas, unable to do visa runs - getting caught and deportation.

    3) Becoming sick and not being able to afford treatment. Depending on the country there might be no cover. Annual travel insurance policies don't cover moving overseas. Annual expat policies are expensive.

    4) History repeating itself - whatever behaviour caused debt in the first place causes a recurrence, but in an environment without the rights and protections of the UK. This can result in violence from loan sharks or illegal working - see (1)

    5) Just hating the new country. Fine as a tourist destination but after a while whether it's the weather, not speaking the language or missing marmite, you end up desperately lonely and miserable.

    5) Family issues - eg elderly parents becoming sick - drive you to return.

You can flee but if you end up using than institutions subsidiary in the place you go to expect the chase.

Believe there was a member here who fled HSBC Dubai only for them to be chased by HSBC in the UK.

You should man up and pay what you owe.
