Need Help! Virgin MBNA card

Hi Guys,
I have recently cleared my Virgin MBNA card before it's 0% BT deal ended. I have made it certain that my balance was zero before I cancelled my DD from my current account and good eneough days before my DD is due.
Today I have checked my Virgin account and found out that I was charged for £12 for unpaid and returned DD:mad: . I've rang Virgin-MBNA and was told that it's because I haven't inform on their end that I cancelled my DD. I was very furious and to me I felt that it's very unfair and unlawful. A month ago my wife has also a Virgin card which she settled, cancelled her DD and didn't inform MBNA but was never been charged for unpaid DD and went on to close her account.
Can anyone tell me if I will be able to claim back these charges? I've made the payment of £12 today and would close the account once they have received my payment. I've been trying to avoid paying interests on my CC and now I've been stung. I would appreciate any replies.
cheers

The affect of a manual payment, when a direct debit is active on your account, varies between lenders. MBNA takes no account of any payment made and will automatically collect the direct debit specified on the statement unless instructed otherwise.
If you ring Customer Services, they may refund the charge as a goodwill gesture. There's no harm in asking.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
I've tried to ring again MBNA CS but would not waive the fee, anyway I've made one off payment to clear my balance. First time had happened to me so good lesson learnt. I'm planning to apply for one of their branded CC, should I close my Virgin card and apply or apply and close the card later? I am not sure if you have to wait for a few months to apply if close my Virgin card.

You made a mistake, but I guess you are not the only one to have done so? It clearly states on your statement the date and ammount of the DD. You ought to have deducted this from outstanding balance and paid that. Then waited for next statement before cacelling account then DD mandate.

It was indeed a costly mistake after stoozing for more than 3 years now and refused blankly to refund the charges. But we'll only learn from our mistakes and would try to be careful and cautious next time. It's a shame as I was hoping for a 3rd repeat 0% extension with my virgin card.
Now, would it have negative effect on my future CC applications even if I didn't have any balance on this card except for returned DD? What are my chances of applying for a different branded MBNA? or should I close the card now? I would appreciate any replies guys.

Yorkshireboy thanks for your reply. As I have said I made a mistake and I should have not cancelled my DD too soon upon clearing my balance and not informing Virgin-MBNA. It was for the main reason that after reading some few threads in here regarding repeat offers possibly for the 3rd time that they were unlucky that's why I was planning to close my card and then when I'll ring them I'll see if they offer any extension, which is highly unlikely now.
The other query is about the future CC application. Will it appear now on my credit file that I had a missed payment (for a returned DD) even if I don't have any balance on this card?0 -

If it does appear (probably due to some automated system or other), then I'm sure if you rang them they'd remove any late payment marker. It was for the main reason that after reading some few threads in here regarding repeat offers possibly for the 3rd time that they were unlucky0 -
MBNA should be re branded to !!!!!! Turpin Bank As they have just pu my rate up from approx 15% to a breaking 29% on my MBNA virgin Card could be a few reasons 1 In the passed i have been in arrears and not used my card for years even if i could. 2 Richard Branson wants to get cash in to buy Northen Rock. 3 I claimed back my charges which they would only pay part of as they say that they dont have to repay them for before the ruling in 06. 4 i stopped the PPI and amd claiming it back. Im wondering if this is happening to others?
I also have a MBNA card under the Abbey Brand again i have claimed back the charges and also stopped and claming back the PPI they paid some of the charges but again claim they dont have to repay anything prior to the ruling in 06 plus after a few months have started to apply charges for the PPI. They have not increased the interest rate on this card yet whats the betting they soon will0 -
I did exactly the same and i wrote to Virgin explaining that it was done in erroe and i thought it was little unfair etc etc and they refunded the £12 charge to me.0
