Thanks for the clarification aj23. We are pretty sure the surcharge on this occasion was linked to the CC payment option only because the original intention was to buy by debit card. It was only when the CC was mentioned that the surcharge came up.

The dealer is right about one thing, they are allowed to recover the costs of doing business (including their CC handling costs) but only by building those costs into their overall business model, not by making surcharges in this manner.

If he is charging a fee for CC but not DC, then that is still wrong. Ask if he charges for all methods. If yes, then he can do that. If it's only for CC, then that's illegal.

Yes, we know that, thank you.

I was only clarifying that regardless or Credit or Debit card, neither should be chargeable given that no other methods are.

And you only know it now because I clarified it earlier.

Thank you, aj23 for putting me right. I can't understand how I managed to be so wrong about all this.

Now, and not wishing to appear rude, if you would kindly read the entire thread (properly) and my first response to your first interjection (properly) you will (possibly) understand just how wide of the mark you are with the post above.

I imagine you have interpreted my comment about businesses being able to recover the costs of card processing as somehow meaning I believe discriminatory surcharging is permitted. Read it again (properly this time) and you will see what I actually said was that businesses should build their business models to include the costs of doing business - and that includes CC processing costs.
