Bank charges

I lost my job about 3 years ago at that time I had a £200 overdraft. I am now on ESA benefits and always in my overdraft. Barclays bank charge me approximately £30/£40 in charges a month. I called the bank and explained this to them and was told to get a basic account and they have stopped the charges. All I want to do is get out of the overdraft and cancel it. Can I claim back the charges and get out of this vicious cycle. I was also told that banks by law cannot take my benefit money. Is this true?

They will consider current hardship cases and refund some recent charges is an option to them. However, so is suspending future charges or putting you on a debt plan. As they have stopped future charges, they do appear to have considered your situation.I was also told that banks by law cannot take my benefit money. Is this true?
