I left the UK 30 years ago because I was getting far better job offers in the USA than I was getting in the UK. I always planned to retire back to the UK, but I don't think I'll do that now.

We will spend the winter in the USA, and the summer in the Uk.

Anyone thinking about moving abroad, Europe South America, depending on your country of choice, liiving expenses can be much lover than the Uk especially if you don’t have a mortgage or rent to pay, the warm weather is a big plus.

Where it's warm, can correspondingly be humid and wet or dusty and dry. Few places are perfect.

Quite fancy that myself. Though will do Europe as well.
Any particular parts of USA? We go every year but only to DisneyWorld and Universal

I am thinking about it. It's a lot of things to organise. Suppose if doing it slowly it will not feel as scary. Issues- tax for example. As far as I can see in Spain where I am looking at it is higher and Isas don't exist and I am wary about complications with tax etc with being resident in one country and having serious interests ( property, citizenship, possibly work) in another.
I absolutely disagree with JC - in any case how his opinion is any better than opinion of any bloke in the pub on all topics but TV and cars. There is a saying that a person has lived as many lives as the quantity of languages he/she knows. Why not to try living different life - we live only once . As I was saying to my partner " I will find it hard to leave this house , it is part of me " he responded " there will be new houses and new adventures" and he is very right..
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

I wouldn't want to move to another country, but hopefully we will be Snowbirds next winter. If I can get my wife retired by the end of this year we will be heading South in the Motorhome next January, to explore Spain and Portugal for 3 months.

Definitely winters abroad. Summers probably in the UK, but I dunno, when I've been away for long stretches in the past, I've never felt much of a desire to come home except for work opportunities.

I think becoming a Swallow (Winter abroad and Summer UK) has an appeal, any complications can be overcome, we're thinking of taking our "gap years" in retirement having not had them between finishing education and work.

We're thinking of having several years travelling during the UK winter to places we want to go Asia, South America and India then planning to maybe have several years campervan holidays in Europe in the winter. I suspect that we'll look at what we have and decide from there where it is we'll go.

We plan on travelling more when we first retire but are scheduled to have increasing income as we age and SP kicks in. Now where is that spreadsheet again.................

Several years ago the plan was to move to Spain when we reach retirement, however we now think we will stay in the U.K. and do as many winter holidays as we can. Perhaps a few weeks down in the canaries Nov/dec and then maybe south east Asia, Feb/March, I think this would break the winter up nicely.

What puts me off Spain was the low personal allowance, lack of isas and tax rates on income which seem higher than U.K. Cyprus could be an option as a location, as the tax rates look lower than Spain.

There is now so much choice for property rentals abroad that I see no reason to have a winter bolt hole anywhere, as we can rent in different locations and keep it interesting for holidays. We are still 10 years off retirement but this is our current thinking, if the finances allow.

Do you think someone could retire to Colombia, or any other South American state, buy a property outright, so no mortgage or rent, and live off the £164.35 UK state pension? Or are the living expenses too high?
