How do we find out which smart meters are compatible with other companies?

Hi all

My mum is just looking at changing her gas an elec provider as she's coming up to the end of her fix. She's currently with Npower and has a smart meter (she says she had no choice in it) and Green Network Energy have a good price and she wants to go with them. How do we find out if her Npower smart meter will work? Likewise, how would we find out which other suppliers it works with?

Thanks

Smets 2 meters are cross compatible.
If not and it's smets1, she can just take meter readings and submit them herself as she would have done pre-smart meter, so she can still change to whichever supplier has the best deal.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

At this time it would be sensible to assume that NO smart meters are compatable, regardless of what the various companies claim.

    I agree with badmemory.

Even if you do get a SMETS2 meter there's no guarantee that there will actually be interoperability between suppliers yet as that will rely on both the leaving and gaining suppliers co-operating with the Data Communications Company to ensure that the data gets transferred correctly.

The fact that a SMETS2 meter might actually talk to the DCC doesn't necessarily mean that the infrastructure is in place for the transfer between suppliers as well

Hopefully it will be but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

When she changes suppliers she needs to get into the habit of reading the meters herself and entering them online - then she won't get estimated bills.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Your Mums meter will work with every other supplier as a normal meter (termed as a dumb meter ).. She would have to do it the old fashioned way and have a glimpse at the meter herself for a few seconds..hardly a chore !.. The only exception to this is if Mum has a prepayment meter. Some meters , Secure Liberty keyboard meters can t work as prepays with some major suppliers, eg BG, Scot Power, EDF, SSE
