in debt with sky

In 2004 i called sky to cancel my package as i was out of contract and didnt want it anymore, the call handler said i could not cancel immediately but she could put me on a 'very discounted rate' for three months after which i could cancel my subscription, i accepted this at the time and then after three months called to cancel, after a couple of weeks i received a bill for £39.99 ( the cost of the full package then) i called to refute this and ask that this be annulled. Then mid 2005 i recieved another letter demanding payment, again i called to dispute it after which nothing happened for a while, then they started sending me letters threating court action so to keep the peace i sent a cheque around december 2005. i heard nothing until jun 2006 when i received a letter demanding charges from my BANK for a bounced check, sky had held the cheque for over five months before attempting to cash it this cost me £39 in bank charges.at this point it all went quiete with sky offering me free subscription/connection or £40 off anything i owed them if i signed up to a 18 month contract, these offers came regularly until august of THIS YEAR when all of a sudden demands for payment began again,i called sky and asked them to quash this charge as i had made it clear from the beggining that i wanted to cancel, they said they would look into it,the same proccess happened twice and now in november 2007 they are again threatening court action to get this money.I feel that sky are not listening to me and are hell bent on taking this money from me regardless.could anyone suggest anything apart from making a counter claim in court to get these bloodsuckers off my back??

You seem to have let it drag on for too long without taking positive action. You have made an admission of "blame" by paying the cheque in the first place. No wonder its all got so confused. Why pay them the cheque in the first place? You seem to be going round in circles.Your posts on the bank charges thread seem to show you are very capable of handling this,so I am quite confused why you dealt with it this way? Why didnt you ask them to check the recorded phone call in the first instance?

Agree with hollydays, you have really let this drag on, and you have admitted liability.

Sky were entitled to present the cheque at anytime within six years, so they did nothing wrong in presenting the cheque five months after you sent it.

I do not think that a counter claim will get you anywhere. I assume that you have no record that you cancelled/ downgraded your package, and this assertion actually contradicts your attempt to make payment.
    Gone ... or have I?
