Does anyone know how Hastings Direct did this?

At 3.55pm today I got an email from Hastings Direct with the subject line "Getting a new car? Here’s something worth knowing…".

Today I have been browsing Autotrader. How can Hastings Direct possibly know that I have been looking at cars, and doesn't that constitute a massive breach of privacy? Furthermore, there was NO unsubscribe link on the email.

I am peeved.

Could be a co-incidental spam message, or something you have inadvertently agreed to with Autotrader (ie allowed them to pass your details to their "associate companies")

This was the subject of the email.

How could they get your email address from your "browsing"? Just a coincidence and that's why they do it - if they sent out 1 million emails you can be certain that some of those people will have been looking at buying a car.

  • Ah OK. Amazingly strange co-incidental email then. Thank you folks.

It would appear so as I received the email but have no intention of changing my car.

I was also annoyed by the lack of an "unsubscribe" link as the email indicated that to change the mailing options you have to log into your account which I didn't have time to do (as this means digging out a file and looking up the login details).
