Gas and Electricity

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I am currently with SSE for my gas and electricity (dual fuel) and also have a smart meter.

Am I right in thinking that now I have a smart meter with SSE I am tied to them and cannot switch suppliers?

If I can switch suppliers, will I need to have their smart meter fitted?

1. You can switch supplier whenever you want.
2. Your smart meters may lose its smart bit when you switch so you would have to read your own meters in that case.
3. As you have smart meters, a new supplier may not want to install new ones

This may only be a temporary situation as it is the intention that at least some of the older Smart meters may be capable of being upgraded so they can talk to all suppliers. Don't hold your breath - I think the last date I saw was December 2018 but that didn't happen.
