Off the hook alert noise

DH was awoken at 4am by a noise that turned out to be the downstairs phone (I’m a heavy sleeper and didn’t hear it). It was loud enough that he heard it from upstairs, and he found the phone had been left off the hook.

We’re trying to work out how long the phone was off, we didn’t take any calls after 2pm and he came to be last at 12.30am. How long does it take for the alert tone to get loud enough to hear from upstairs? The phone was in the room with us all evening and we didn’t hear an alert before bed.

Comments

  • Depends on the exchange. If it was applied automatically it's usually about 3 minutes after the other party has hung up. After midnight it might have been applied by automated line testing.

Or it was on earlier and you just didn't hear it.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
