If anyone can help - thank you very much. I am not sure if this is a question to ask here or if another forum might be better. Please move for me if necessary.

My Vokera Gas Boiler (Compact 28 SE - about five years old now) would not turn off or allow me to reduce the heating level and I woke up to my flat being very hot: 24 to 27 degrees centigrade this morning. The heating must have been on full all night. There was an Error Code E82 on the ? is it called remote room thermostat in the hall in my flat which 'speaks' to the boiler in the kitchen? I tried for a while and could not turn the heating down at all.

I telephoned my Home Contents Insurance Policy with Emergency Home Cover - I have had the policy for about ten months and have never had to contact them (Direct Line) before. I found that I am only covered for 'no heating or hot water' or for a leak and, generally, the policy seems to cover limited Emergencies but not 'Breakdown.' It was going to cost £99 for a one hour call out and more if the repair was going to take longer. At the last regular annual service (paid separately by me and as a condition of the policy) there were no problems.

Thankfully I found a YouTube link and it took me 'ages' and really struggled with it. It was a bit like 'trial and error' as my 'equipment' did not all match with the YouTube images, but I have managed to turn the heating off. I have not tried to turn it on since but will try later.

If it is fixed I will be very pleased but, if not ,can anyone please tell me what caused the E82 error code and if it is something I need to call a 'Gas Safe' person out to check for repair. At the moment, with the YouTube help, the 'unit' in my hall seems to be 'back to normal.' The batteries were replaced at the last routine service.

Is there anything I should be doing to prevent this Error 'E82' recurring?

I probably won't be renewing my Direct Line Emergency Policy because, had it not been for YouTube, I might have had to pay over £99 - as well as the insurance premium. I misunderstood the policy and thought 'Emergency' would mean 'Breakdown.' It is my fault.

Any help or information will be very much appreciated, thank you.

  • Googling found this which may or may not help:)

Seems to indicate batteries within unit?

  • Thanks Queenrider - my 'unit' is not 'Wi-fi' at all and seems to work by battery from the ? remote room thermostat to the main boiler. The batteries in the thermostat seem to be all right. I am not sure at all what the E82 Error Code actually means.

I'm thankful, if it had to happen at all, it is on a not too cold day. I'll know, once I turn the thermostat temperature up, if the 'unit' is working. For now I am relieved that the heating is not on 'full' as I have been able to (with the YouTube help) 'get rid of' the E82 Error Code. If it is something which will need attention I will be grateful to know - to arrange a repair.

It is good of you to reply, thank you.

  • The remote thermostat will use some sort of RF comms to tell the boiler to turn on/off based on temperature. I don't know the system, but if the error code is being shown on the thermostat, it's possibly a fault in the thermostat rather than the boiler itself. Low batteries as was suggested, or a comms glitch.

Perhaps the youtube video you saw was the one titled "Vokera besmart E82 communication error", showing a letter.

It looks like that is telling you to perform the sequence to "pair" the receiver on the boiler with the transmitter on the thermostat. Not sure why should have become unpaired. But it would certainly explain the symtom : thermostat asked the boiler to turn on when it got cold, but then when it was warm enough and it tried to ask the boiler to turn off, it had lost contact.

There may well be a receiver plugged into the boiler : https://www.plumbingforless.co.uk/heating/gas-boilers/vokera-boiler-controls/vokera-wireless-rf-7-day-programmable-room-thermostat-20101743 mentions "This Vokera RF Room Thermostat is ideal for the Vokera Compact A combi boilers - with the receiver being easily connected to the boiler using the 'plug and play' Tyco socket." If so, that's the bit that speaks RF to the thermostat, and could also have a fault. But the "boilery" bit itself is probably fine.
  • Yes, thanks psychic teab..., the link you have given goes to the thermostat I have. The YouTube is the same one although it was not identical to what was on the thermostat. By trial and error it seems to have 'paired' with the boiler again. I'm just hoping it does not happen again before the annual service in May - especially as I now know my Emergency Policy does not cover me.

It is reassuring that the boiler itself is probably all right, thanks. As the batteries are OK, I hope it is just a glitch.

Thank you for all this helpful information which is much appreciated. I am just hoping it really is OK now.

  • I have checked and my home contents/emergency cover is due to expire on 01 May 2019. I am just now going to post on the"Insurance" site in case anyone has experience of British Gas 'Four' Boiler cover. Thank you very much for your helpful replies regarding my Vokera E82 error.

  • If anyone can give some more information I'll be grateful thanks. I'm so pleased to have been able to remedy the Error Code E82 and, so far, my Vokera boiler has been working really well. I really appreciated the help.

When the Error Code E82 was 'on' it was impossible to turn the heating off and it was on 'full.' If this happens when I am on holiday or away from home (even in summer) it would become very hot and expensive with the heating on all the time. I competely forgot to ask at the routine service. The receiver batteries have been renewed and should be all right for about a year.

I have looked at my instruction manual but can't see how to do what I think may give me peace of mind when I am away. Is it possible to turn my boiler to 'hot water only' with no central heating on? If this is possible, any help as to how to do it will be really appreciated. I can see the knobs on the front of the boiler but I am not sure which one, if either, to touch. I am very apprehensive about turning the boiler off at the 'main' switch on the wall.

By having 'hot water only' if that is possible, would this prevent the heating from coming on 'full' if the Error Code E82 came on when I was away?

Thank you very much for any help or advice.

The link to the thermostat posted by psychic teabag mentions Holiday and OFF modes, either of which should do the job for you.

Thank you very much Agrinnall. I must have overlooked that information.

I'll look at the link again now and make notes for when I am away, thanks.

  • I have just gone through the link and I have looked at a YouTube clip about setting the timer. I have not been able to find exactly how to put it to holiday mode or hot water mode - although I really have tried to find the instructions.

The YouTube makes it easy to understand setting the timer etc. but nothing about holiday or hot water mode. Scrolling through the PDF instructions I could not find how to actually set it. It explained that this can be done and that, after the holiday time, it reverts to the previous settings - but not, that I could find, how to do it.

What could I be missing, please?
