ppi company used nothing found

Member for a while but my first post so apologies if it is lengthy.
We signed documents with a ppi company authorising their search a couple of years ago. Months later they had found nothing. If we 'do it ourselves' now and are successful can they claim their commission?. I read somewhere they can see if you were successful so they just ask for their share.
We want to doublecheck on car loans as we didn't think they could have ppi and remembered a couple of store cards.
Thanks for any feedback.

So a claims company could not find any evidence that you ever had PPI based upon the information that you provided to them. So what do you expect to achieve on a do it yourself basis?0

They can ask but they are not legally entitled to it and have been warned by the ministry of justice that they could be committing fraud by doing so. However, many CMCs are worse than the banks were and will do anything for a commission.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
