Idiots guide to a new kitchen?

Options
Hi everyone-as the title says I’m looking for an idiots guide to the steps for redoing the kitchen? Finding it a bit overwhelming and would love to know in which order I need the different contractors to carry out their work?
Thanks in advance!

• Are you looking to organise the contractors yourself or use the kitchen supplier to do it?
• Kitchen will be coming from DIY Kitchens so will have to organise everything myself!
• I guess its difficult to say, but the best way to plan a job is to start with a list, then expand on it, sleep on it, expand, sleep etc etc.

So, I will make a head start and folk here can add to it I guess :-)

1. Sympathetically remove old Kitchen (Joiner / Labourer)
2. "First Fix" Electrical (Electrician)
3. Relocate / Modify Piping (Water / Gas) (Plumber)
4. Plastering (Plasterer)
5. Painting (Painter)
6. Install Kitchen Units (Joiner)
7. Contact Worktop Supplier (Granite?) (Supplier)
8. Measure Kitchen for Worktops (Granite) (Supplier)
9. Fit Worktops (Supplier or Joiner, depends on material)
10. "Final Fix" Electrical (Electrician)
11. Install Appliances (You, Joiner or Electrician)
12. Clean, Polish (You)
13. Cook! (Don’t actually cook. Just admire the kitchen. Look but don’t touch)
This is pretty much the order that we did it in. It’s a little simplistic, but would be a good starting point. As you think of more jobs you can add to it. For example;
1. Take delivery of new Kitchen (You)
a) Unbox units
b) Check contents
1. Sympathetically remove old Kitchen (Joiner / Labourer)
a) Scrap worktops
b) Carefully keep cupboards
1. "First Fix" Electrical (Electrician)
a) 6 new sockets
b) 1 phone charger
c) TV wall bracket

This is all guesswork as I don’t know what you are doing……but should help make a start.

Here a generic order you can use:

Any changes to the ceiling
Rip out old kitchen
Any Repairs to walls/plaster
Electrics 1st fit
Plumbing 1st fit
Kitchen Wall Units
Kitchen Floor Units
Worktops
Plumbing 2nd Fix
Electrics 2nd Fix
Tiling
Flooring

1st fit means installation of new pipe/wires into and onto the walls
2nd fit means connection of wires/pipes to appliances/taps etc.

Having an accurate plan that the electricIan, plumber and kitchen fitter have all signed off on is a must. Try to include the tiled in this if you can.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

No matter who you get the kitchen from measure carefully then measure again. Plus check the corners are right angles by making a jig, 3X4X5 works for this. Next check the electrics are OK and the plumbing hot, cold, waste are where needed as all these need to be sorted before fitting the new units.
• Wow! Thanks so much for taking the time to post! Suppose it’s just the co-ordination of the contractors to be careful of -making sure one job is finished before another one can begin! Just don’t want it to take forever!

You could always find a kitchen installer who will do it all for you.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
• Assuming you have the space try and get the kitchen delivered 2 weeks before install date. This will give you time to check for damages and report them to DIY Kitchens.
• Thanks everyone!
