Satin v Gloss

Options
Hi

Can anyone help with a little advice?

Is Satin Wood Paint durable enough for Banister, Spindles & Hand Rails.

Or

Is Gloss the only real way to do it.

Thanx

I like the satin and use the Colours once stuff in pure brilliant white. If the banister is already painted then a light sand to key it and one coat does it.

I hate glossing (as I call it even though it's satin) so doing it in one coat saves a lot of time and for the extra few quid per tin its well worth it.
  • Yes, it is. I have eggshell on all of my woodwork, I can't stand heavy gloss.

I'm not sure what the latest formulations are like, but I've gone for satin previously as it stays white longer. Water based paints (satin) stay white in a way that oil based paints (gloss) do not.
I've got a plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel.

I avoided oil based paint due to the yellowing issue, but I employed a decorator last time and he used Dulux Diamond oil based eggshell assuring me it stayed white.

The finish is far better than water based satin - it takes a few days to dry, but for a few days it is worth it. It leaves a very hard, dirt resisting finish - any dirt can be wiped off easily.

After 7 years the decorator was true to his word - modern oil based paint doesn't go off white after a few years.

    Another for eggshell, love it.

I'm completely into these new waterbased paints that are very easy to use and clean.
