I want a back up and store in case my PC fails or the memory gets full. I understand a memory stick iis the answer to store both photos and music. Is it better to buy two memory sticks, one for photographs and one for photographs. If I got a 32gb memory stick roughly how many songs and photographs would each one hold.

They say about 3,000 to 4,000 photos but that is subject to you using jpeg compression. If you are using something like nikon's Nef, the equivalent of Raw, then it would be considerably less as each photo could be as much as 50 to 60MB each.
As for songs it's reckoned to be about 8,000 using MP3 format, again dependent on the file format you are using.0 -
USB sticks are not really a backup solution, you need at least three backups especially for your photos which can't be re-created. Have a cloud backup, an external hard disk and sticks for convenience .4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Make sure you get a memory stick from a reputable supplier and that it’s a USB 3 one. Beware there are a lot of fakes around. £9.69 will get you a 64GB USB 3 Sandisk from Amazon, or £7.71 for a 32GB one.0

Post 3 indicates a memory stick is not the solution for a way of ensuring you do not lose all your photographs stored on a PC. Whilst Post 5 suggests this is an ideal way of storing your photographs as back up. I was of the understanding that is anything happened and you lost your photos on a PC you could insert the memory stick into a USB port on my PC, and it would reload all your photographs which are irreplacable. I am on Windows 10. Maybe two 32gb memory sticks might be better using one for music which is a mixture of my own CD's and downloads from U Tube. Then the other fand much ,more imporyany for my photos,. So if you only lost one or the other it would be easier but a more expensive option. Clarification would be very valuable as to whether a memory stick Is the correct way to store as back up . If not what should I do to avoid a disaster which I hope never happens.0

Ideally you need a external hard drive and also some cloud storage ie. Google photos/Dropbox/OneDrive/Google music etc"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Google photos as a starting point, followed closely by an external hard drive as dipsomaniac said.
Google photos will back up your pics automatically as they are put onto your PC, or, directly from your phone as you take them.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
