Hi, I intend to get surgery in Turkey later this year and I've got a few questions.

1. Would s75 cover apply if I paid on my credit card? Not sure if this is relevant, but payment will be conducted over in Turkey (no deposit) and the payee does not have a UK registered office.

If I am covered, then
2. I was hoping that joint liability will apply so I could pay a small sum on the credit card (such as 1 euro) to avoid card transaction fees, and then pay the rest in cash. Is it correct that my credit card provider would be liable for the full amount even if I only pay 1 euro on the card?

3. If I have to pay a greater sum than the 1 euro to be covered, then can anybody recommend a fee free credit card? I heard halifax do one but Im not sure which one. Currently I just have Amex Nectar, Amex Platinum Cashback (the bog standard one) and Tesco Clubcard Mastercard. I believe all of these cards I have aren't the best to be using abroad.

4. Lastly, not credit card related but I may as well ask... I haven't set a date for the treatment as I want to book the cheapest flight first, then book the treatment. The problem Im finding when looking for flights on websites such as skyscanner is that these websites always ask for dates I want to fly. Im not concerned about dates, I just want the cheapest prices they can find. Currently I am having to input two dates, then click back, then test another two dates, then see which is cheaper, and so on. Can anybody recommend a website where I can simply ask it to find my flights from Manchester to Turkey for two nights.

That Google result is from 2006! Could well be wrong now.

Unlikely - it's a appeal court ruling. Upheld on appeal:

  • so long as goods or services are over £100, anything paid on a CC towards this will be covered. as for the medical treatment and protection, i am not entirely sure if you are covered under s75 or not. Cant find anything to say you wont be, but remember reading something about s75 and medical procedures somewhere - hopefully someone else will come along and give you a yes or no

skyscanner - input your dates search - from departing airport, you can input UK - this will then bring a list up of which airport is cheapest to fly out from.
you can also select "whole month" when you click on the departure date, on the little calendar at top right, select whole month...
  • also, use a comparison site for a travel CC - these card usually do not charge anything for international transactions/transactions abroad

Tandem CC is excellent abroad - also get 0.5% cashback! You need a smartphone though.

As above Section 75 should apply, however since it covers breach of contract you'd need to demonstrate that a breach occurred under Turkish law, since that's what applies to the transaction.

So in practice it may be very difficult and expensive to actually use Section 75 for anything other than the most obvious breach.

I think you need to do a little more homework before booking your flight and surgery. The currency in Turkey is Turkish Lira, not Euros. Cheap surgery abroad can be very dangerous, make sure you do as much research as possible, and not just about Section 75 claims. I would also be very uncomfortable with any surgeon or hospital that would accept a large amount of cash.

If you are using Skyscanner to find flights, pick a date, any date, then click on WHOLE MONTH then choose the month you want to go.

You can then see what they think will be the cheapest days to travel in that month.
  • It being in Turkey won’t matter but many other things can affect s75.

Just beware of people saying “you are covered” because there are no guarantees. There’s actually a significant chance any claim would be rejected (generally speaking)

You’d be wiser paying it all on CC meaning you also have the chargeback scheme to fall back on in the first instance.
