Take it to your LBS with the tyre and tube on. They will take them off, sort the wheel and refit the tyre. They aren't going to charge you any extra for putting the tyre and tube back on.

Totally agree. Do a google for your local bike shop and take it there. It probably won't be anymore expensive and they'll certainly do a more reliably trustworthy job.

In the nature of forums, I've trued wheels and replaced spokes without deflating or removing the tyre. I'm not suggesting its ideal but its never caused a problem.

I have watched loads of wheelbuilders and top cyclists building wheels and replacing spokes, and I have never seen one leaving the tyres, tube and rim tapes on.

I'm not a wheelbuilder or top cyclist, just a cyclist replacing a spoke. I've replaced about 5 spokes this way without any problems.

They did try to true it best they could but were not happy with result so to be fair didn't charge me. Perhaps me running without noticing the broken spoke was to blame (I do hit some harsh bumps on my routes) but the rim was not good. I could have used it though as it was vastly better than when I took it in.

but without any suggestion from the shop I decided to buy a new better wheel, I was going to fit a new higher geared (11-28) freewheel I bought anyway and new bearings so might as well start fresh and do all in one,

Took it out last night and its rolling sweet! the new gearing means I can hold 20mph for periods now which probably seems nothing to many here but it is a pretty heavy cheap full suspension mountain bike with very low gearing so I am pretty pleased at that (with the 14 tooth original 15mph was hard enough, legs going too fast.)

As another aside, I tried my padded cycle tights/trousers without pants for the first time.. don't laugh! but I didn't know.. what a revelation, much more comfortable and no wedgies. Somehow it just felt wrong, but oh so right! :o
