bicycle wheel true

Hi,
Has anyone taken a bike wheel to Halfords to be re-trued?
Do I have to strip off the tyre and tube or do I just take it as it comes straight off the bike?
Thanks (I did message Halfords but no response).

I make my own wheels. I would always take the tyre and tube off before truing. In fact if I ever remove my tyre and inner tube I always check the wheel for trueness before putting the tyre and inner tube back on. I am sure someone will come along and say they can do it without - that seems to be the nature of forums!0

Has anyone got any experience specific to the Halfords service please?
Thanks.0 -

Specific to Halfords? I would avoid at all costs especially for something like that!
Take it to a proper bike shop and get it done properly so all the spoke tensions are actually correct and even and not just done up enough so the wheel is true! Those who risk nothing, Do nothing, achieve nothing, become nothingMFW #63 £0/£5000 -
No experience of Halfords. However as a general point, removing and replacing the tyre and tube is about the simplest and quickest job I can think of - even I can manage that one. So if any shop expected me to do it myself that would lead me to question their attitude and/or competence to the extent that I wouldn't want use their repair service in the first place.0

Yes, anyone truing a wheel correctly will have the the tyre/tube removed and I would expect Halfords to do the same although personally I would take it to a decent, independent cycle shop to get it done properly.
You shouldn't be expected to remove the tyre yourself when taking it in, but as Aretnap mentioned above, it is one of the easiest jobs to do so why wouldn't you.0 -
I wouldn't trust Halfords to pump the tyres up, let alone true a wheel...go to a proper bike shop.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks everyone, the discussion really isn't what is better. Just trying to avoid a wasted journey of taking wheel in and them saying oh we need it the opposite to how you bought it in...sods law.
I will phone then direct.0 -

FWIW not going to halfords for a shoddy job is best. (unless you have one of the rare good ones).0 -

It very much depends on the store.
Not somewhere I would use for bike repairs if there are any other options though.0
