any asbestos testing companies that are honest?

looking for a way to get a piece of flue tested for asbestos. it seems there are no independant companies or gov dept's that can do this. they are all removers as well, which to me seems a bit of a way of making money when actually the flue might be harmless.

Why do you want it tested? Leave it alone and it wont bite you.

But if you insist on poking a stick at it. screwfix sell DIY testing kits and there are numerous independent companies on line?

    Try Google?

  • cheers all, yes have my tin foil hat at the ready.

we want to extend and an old chimney could do with being removed.

i did ask the previous owner before i bought the house if there was any asbestos in the chimnies to which he replied via my solicitor that there wasnt and they were just clay lined.

well after we moved in i found the log burner chimney was indeed clay lined but the one to the rear of the property, which he chopped a kitchen extractor into, looks very asbestos like, going by the fragments laid in the bottom of the inspection cover.

the house was built in 1967 and had a coke boiler previously. the suspect liner is inside the clay one.

when i bought this up with my solicitor they said they couldnt do anything. i contacted the surveyor and asked if he had inspected the chimney as i thought it was asbestos. he said no, but thought it would just be fire cement (which if you google it contains asbestos).

so weve blocked the extractor and left it alone for 4 years.

your expecting too much from the surveyor, he/she hasn't got xray eyes and 99% of the time won't even lift the corner of a carpet to to see what the floor is made of, so opening inspection hatches in chimneys is not even on the list.
With regards to your asbestos the above posts have given you some companies you can look at, possibly even trying the screwfix kit beforehand then getting a second opinion if its not definitive.
  • checked the screwfix site and i cant find the test kit. maybe theyve been told to stop selling them.

The suspect material belongs to you. Nobody else has dumped it on to you.

Look in your local yellow pages for any asbestos testing companies that are local to you (they should be AKAS accredited). You don't have to use the same company to do the removal.

I used www.passukltd.co.uk to test a few samples for me and Scancross to remove ceiling board for me.

Both companies offer great service and were inexpensive. No connection with those businesses, just a happy customer.

well as I had specifically asked the question, before we bought the house, about the chimney's in question I feel that yes it was dumped on me.
