I have a large magnolia tree. Grass has started to grow under the tree in the bed around the roots. How do I get rid of the grass without disturbing the actual tree. Tried digging it out but because of the roots of the tree being so shallow I cant.

The grass seems to be taking over the actual bed

What do I cover it with? Will this stop the grass coming through

You can buy weed suppressing material in rolls for this.

However, do you need to? Is there anything else in the bed, or is it just around the tree? If just the tree, let grass grow, it will be fine.

Is this a relativey new tree? And are you working on the theory of leaving a bare circle around it to help it settle in and keep anything else from sucking any nutrients out?
If you really want to create a circle round it, cover it with something to suppress the weeds, cardboard will do, or anything that excludes light, don't use carpet or anything that's going to perish in the sunlight, like plastic [unless it is specifically for garden use]
You can arrange anything you like on top of this, maybe some decorative stones etc, or you can put some bulbs in [cut slits in the grass, push them in] and cover and uncover in time for them to grow next year [ tulips daffodils for example]
If however it's relatively established tree, there's no need to worry about the grass unlesss you want to get rid of it because it's couch grass or similar.
