Washing machine marking white clothes

Options
Hi,

We bought this John Lewis washer dryer recently after it got the best rating on Which? - The problem is that it’s leaving these marks on my white clothes :(

Any ideas please? Also is there any way to get the marks out? I’ve tried multiple wash cycles (synthetics, delicates and sportswear) and also both Ariel and Astonish stain remover but if anything it gets worse. I’ve also used a washing machine cleaner and put it through on a machine clean setting.

Possibly it only effects this particular type of fabric - I’ve noticed it on my white football shirts but not on white cotton towels.

Thank you

Have you done a boil wash with the cleaner?
Have a look at the seal and give that a good clean too.

  • My son has a bit of a penchant for these man-made fibre sports types shirts IN WHITE!!!!! too and they always seem to get marks like that on them from my washing machine too - nothing I have done has removed them :)

I encourage him to buy a different colour now.....

Thanks guys! Have tried a boil wash (never heard of that term before, but we never had a single problem with our old cheap washing machine in 8 or so years!) - 90 degrees with a good amount of detergent and baking soda in there. I've given the rubber seal a good clean too, I wipe the bottom of the seal after every wash (again, never had to do that on our old one) but I've just done the top too.

Working Mum that doesn't bode well! :( I've tried all sorts too with no luck. Would love to know if there is anyway to get rid of these marks.

And thanks, that's a good idea - I'll contact John Lewis and see if they have any idea :)

Wonder if there is something wrong with the seal and clothes are getting ‘pinched’ in the seal?

Does the machine vibrate a lot on the high spin cycles, because although you say it is nearly new/recent, if the drum vibrates excessively, then it can damage the internals and you may get hot plastic bits/shavings getting inside the drum and marking light clothes.

    Usually caused by overloading.

If you have one, wash the things in an old pillowcase - the case will get the marks leaving the garment mark free.

Machine - if the drum can be lifted slightly with the door open then the bearings will probably be on the way out and you have a faulty machine - can be heard when it's in operation by rumbling and excessive shaking as mentioned above.

Thanks guys, it doesn't seem to vibrate excessively but it's hard to tell if it's functioning correctly - the engineer said it was okay when fitting it, but it was actually imbalanced meaning it completely come out and was banging around, so I wonder if that has damaged something? Another engineer came out and re-fitted it and did a test and said it was okay, but it's got me wondering... I'll check of the drum can be lifted slightly with the door open too, thanks :)

Love the idea of washing in an old pillowcase, unfortunately we just got rid of all of our old pillowcases and only have the four we use left (trying to be super minimilist!) - would these laundy bags do a similar job? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mesh-Laundry-Bags-Delicates-Lingerie/dp/B0764GZ4KW/

    Thanks again
