I run a Golf GTD and it's reaching a point where my other half is making noises to replace it and I'm looking for suggestions. I don't want to end up buying something that is a poor comparison and I end up regretting it.

The Golf has descent options fitted - winter pack, Dynaudio sound system etc so looking for something that's a nice place to be when driving.

I don't have a particular budget in mind but I'd prefer whatever I can get for the Golf plus 5/6k

Whats wrong with the golf you have? if there's nothing wrong with it why change it.

This is a money saving site after all :-)
  • How old is the Golf?

£5/6k would keep it running for a fair while...

It's a 15 plate. Nothing wrong as such, it's been maintained to within an inch of its life. I change filters and fluids at 6 month intervals (Castrol edge), but it is due an expensive belt and punp change which i don't have the tools to do, other half is weighing this up for a car change.

  • Unless you go for something like a Lexus, Honda Civic or Toyota Prius, you'll struggle find a better and more reliable car.

Seriously - go for the repairs and keep the Golf. It's a very solid car.
  • 99.9% of the time, the answer to the question "what car should I buy?" is always a Skoda Octavia.

And so it is here. It's just like having a Golf, only better value for money :-)
  • I think the best option is to tell your other half to stop making noises. Is there a genuine reason to trade it? Perhaps need something bigger? Or is she just a number plate snob?

I cant see the logic in spending £6,000 to avoid paying for a £400 job.

I had a Golf nearly ten years older than yours, and it was still working perfectly fine when I sold it. Just fancied something a bit quicker, I dare say if I checked the MOT history I would find its still running.

Descent options? Wow. I thought those were only on off-roaders. :)

a belt and pump change is what ? £450? A lot more economical most would think.
