House buying in Edgeley, Stockport...

“Get the worst house on the best street”... or otherwise, whatever you decide with the property in the future, make sure you add value to it whilst you’re in there!
I’ve just bought a house a stones throw away from you, in Cheadle a couple months ago and chose Stockport due to the excellent transport links and nice up and coming area.
We viewed a house in Edgely too- although not for us, some do have nice quirks and there are a lot of first time buyers/young families there.
If you have the time, spend some time walking/driving around the area for an hour or so to see how you feel. If you’re REALLY bored- do that a couple of times, at different times of day!
I was surprised how low planes were in Stockport too, but nowadays, unless I’m outside in the garden I don’t notice them inside the house when I’m stripping wallpaper..0 -
I haven't spent much time in that area - although I keep meaning to go to Hollywood Park for a walk! When I've walked around the streets near to Castle Street, I've mainly seen young families and couples around so that is quite nice. I would recommend visiting at various points in the week - morning/afternoon and evening. It helps you to work it all out.
Although saying that, the day before we exchanged we went to look at the house and had a slight moment of panic - but I think it was just the nerves kicking in!
In terms of parking, see if the street you live on is eligible for a parking permit. If you are, they are free from Stockport Tourism Office. But I think the general rule is you park outside of your house - that's what it's like on our street. If it's a worry to you, maybe ask the neighbours if you see them and see what they do?
The vibe we have from the area is so different to what we've experienced before. We lived in Rusholme and were having to cope with really bad anti-social behaviour in the area. I'm not saying Edgeley is perfect by any means! But it's been so nice to see people and families in the area - walking their dogs and chatting to each other. There's also community groups working to develop the park which is nice too. As I said, I think we just need more independent shops and cafes opening up. I believe after speaking to others it's been on the wish list for many years, but I think with the regeneration of Stockport it should help.

Thanks everyone.
I have just pulled out of the purchase of the house due to some structural issues we saw on the second visit. (Buyer beware)
So i'll keep an open eye out for houses in Edgeley but it appears this one is not for me.
All the best!0 -
Shame I didn't see your thread when you posted it, I'm local to the area too (and think I posted on MissMarble's threads a while back).
Generally the "best" side of Edgeley is deemed to be the area near Alexandra Park and the reservoirs, but it's not that bad anywhere really. Definitely keep looking in the area, and also consider neighbouring Shaw Heath/Cale Green - also SK3 terraced housing, 10 mins walk to the train station or 15 mins walk to Stockport town centre. Good luck!0
