Evening and weekend work only - lack of morning availability a barrier ?

  • I have limited myself to my local area too as I travel fro my main job but didn't really want to for a second job.
I'm aware I sound fussy but have to consider how long my teenagers are left home alone etc.
  • Is bar work a possibility? Not necessarily at a high street one but a country/ "old man" one may need someone extra to cover weekends and the odd evening
  • Yes that is a possibility thank you.

With your youngest being almost 15 they're old enough to take care of themselves at home - depending on how they are obviously. At the age of 14/15 my mum had me cooking dinner with my brother occasionally for all of us. At 16 my mum went away every other weekend to her new partner's place and left me alone to look after myself.

This will help with their independence when they move as well as helping you be more flexible with a 2nd job. This obviously depends on if you trust your kids and if they're responsible enough, but giving them some independence for a few hours whilst you work.

Have you tried Asda? They were flexible with me whilst I was at uni, I had 16 hours and did 4 shifts over the week. 2 evenings and 2 weekend shifts. They may not employ all the time, but they're also flexible with term times, other supermarkets may be similar too.
  • Yes I’m aware of independence being good for them but the youngest has clubs 4 nights a week which she can’t get herself to just yet so evenings during the week are limited. She is resistant to being left alone and I’m very conscious of this as I’m her only parent and don’t want to just say tough deal with it.

I have told her it’s going to happen but she is very unhappy about it.

Not seen any vacancies at Asda as yet but will apply when I do. There is one ten minutes walk from me.

Our local spoons is always after staff for the evening & weekend shifts.
Especialy the weekend opening for the breakfast through lunch.
Can be very flexible and they need cover for the other mums during the school holidays when they can't get students.

Staff discount is very good on food.

What about looking at working in the school holidays? My daughter's primary school has a holiday playscheme for the half term weeks, Easter and four weeks in the summer - so Christmas and last two weeks of summer holiday would still be free. They are always looking for staff.
  • I am trying to avoid school , cooking or childcare if possible as my main job is an odd mix of these.
