iPlayer update demands HDD space but app is on SD card (Android)

I have several programs on my BBC iPlayer app but I can't get into it without updating it. Although I have 489 megabytes of free space on my phone, Android is saying I need to free up 80-odd megabytes of it. I don't even see why they are insisting on using my valuable internal space.

Is this a phone or a tablet?
I'm assuming this is an older version of Android which doesn't have the option to format an SD card and treat it as internal storage (that was Android 6 and later IIRC?) which would solve this problem.
For older versions sometimes if you uninstall and then reinstall the app and then move it to the SD card it resolves the update issue. 489Mb of space is next to nothing, you should consider freeing up some space.0 -
BBC iplayer works best on internal storage.........you cannot download progs to SD card.....BBC don't allow it

So the iPlayer app knows the difference between real internal storage and SD card media formatted as internal storage?0

Android apps do, yes, under normal circumstances. And BBC iPlayer is one of many that don't allow themselves to be installed onto SD cards. OP needs to tell us what his phone is, Android version, and whether he's using any tricks (built in or downloaded app) that fool the phone into thinking the SD card is internal storage. Also, a restart might help!0 -

So how am I able to download huge files of over 1GB if I have less than half that space on my HDD?
OK, it's an HUAWEI P8 lite 2017 running 7.0 (Nougat). I have an app on it called 'Apps to SD Card' but I never understood it.
Files over 1GB arent program file. They are media
nowadays a phone with 16GB of internal memory needs care on what you install/fill it with
My phone is relatively new and on checking has 27GB of space used allocated to apps alone0 -

No it does not, that is the point of formatting that way. We have to assume here that is not the case (an older version of android of not formatted that way).
(When formatted as internal storage it is encrypted and will only work with the phone that formatted it).0 -
If you want to run BBCiPlayer free up memory on you phone
a phone with only 16GB internal memory is not very much0 -

IDK if the app is on the SD card or not but I'm pretty sure the downloaded programs are.
