If you and your father are both named on the tenancy agreement and the council tax bill your father may be entitled to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction to help with his half of the rent and council tax (unless he has savings ove4 £16,000).

I was unclear when you say that you own a council house with your dad whether you meant you are joint tenants renting it together or whether you do indeed own it in which case it is no longer a council house.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Both you and your father may well be entitled to a reduction in council tax

  • Yes your father would likely qualify for the SMI discount on the council tax giving you a 25% reduction for him before any benefit reductions. I would definitely approach the council for this ASAP, as it could entitle you to a refund which could come in handy.

This CAN be backdated so if he has had this for a while please look into backdating. This could be a very handy sum of money for you!

Try not to be overwhelmed. It’s a big change for you but hopefully you can get everything sorted
  • Yes i got my dad attendance allowance about 6 months ago following constant nagging of my brother to get it..230 a month..
  • We own the house so we dont need housing benefit..
