Typical energy use for a home 'on standby'

OP, the biggest consumption will be used by running your CH for an hour a day, but you didn't note your gas usage, only your electricity? Your boiler only uses a negligible amount of electrical power, on or off.
2kWh is about 24p.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
To be fair, that article was written in June 2010
It was only in 2010 that the law was changed to reduce power consumption of new products left on standby to a maximum of 1 watt.. By the figures you quote, my guess is that your TV was built after 2013 when the requirements were made even more stringent.
My latest TV is new but I posted this on MSE in 2005.I have a 28 inch Panasonic and 32 inch Sony - both about 4 years old - and the Panasonic has a standby consumption of 0.9watts and the Sony 0.6watts.
The Energy saving Trust yet again takes a worse case scenario of a 16 year old TV in order to justify their energy saving advice. Very little balanced advice comes from that organisation.
The Standby Myth
Every post-2006 TV consumes extremely low amounts of power on standby mode, regardless of the type. It's actually your TV accessories that consume quite a bit of power in these situations. Things like the digital set-top box or your gaming console continue to draw power when in standby mode. The TV does this too, but the amount is almost negligible, especially for LED TVs.
0 -

Yes, exactly 24p per day on my tariff.
Just for info, gas use for that period was 0.63 units or around 20 Kwh (63p per day).0 -

So you have an old Imperial Gas meter? - measures in cubic feet - where a gas unit is 100 cubic feet and approx 32kWh.
Most gas meters these days are Metric and a gas unit is 1 cubic metre and approx 11.2kWh.0 -
Cardew you appear to be fixated only on the myth of the TV standby usage .The Energy Saving Trust will be probably way under the true energy wastage of £80 a year. You seem to have got it in for the EST.
Friends I know routinely leave all manner of electrical items on all day and every day. PC s and monitors games consoles , ( three monitors and not on standby neither ) , washing machines dishwashers, dryers, set top boxes spread about in several rooms.Nearer to home with us on here is the nearly total waste of the In House Display energy use monitor , the free gift for accepting a smart meter.. Useless piece of rubbish after the novelty has worn off..Uses about a quid a year and is on for no reason at all.. And why would a doorbell need a light ?
It is in the news this week about the appalling waste of energy with powerful rear garden lights blasting out light killing off essential insects to all life ..moths !
The London Met fire brigade report a fire a week just from fridges ! and don t argue with that after Grenfell !
When I go on hols, my fridge is emptied and switched off and so is my freezer, but then I am a true energy saver.0 -
Not a good idea switching off your router as it will slow down your broadband speed. The exchange will lower your IP profile thinking there are problems on the line every time the router goes off.
Not true (when turning off for long periods, e.g. holiday). DLM will ignore router downtime of more than 30 minutes and assume the cause to be power loss, not line conditions. I have customers who power off at the end of each day without any issues.0 -
We have an electricity monitor and I haven't seen it fall below 4kw/h.
However, we have a constant light and radio on in the stables and 2 fridges. 5 mesh routers and 5 timers and oil monitor all running constantly. Lots of items left on standby.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. One of the advantages of being in the UK is that you can turn appliances off at the plug. My fireman friend turns off everything he can when he goes out.0
