  • OK then, in summary, there's nothing you can ever do about this, even if you are a consumer, which I wasn't. Thanks for the input.

It just seems like they thought "oh, an excuse to be nasty. This will be fun", and let rip. Such a shame.

As the question has been answered already I'll ask you a question in return. What was it the company did that was nasty, smug and haughty?

We get this a lot in consumer rights posts so I'm curious how we've got so many rude customer service agents scattered around.

Good question. It wasn't a rude message, as such; the reply seemed polite but snide, making for example allusions to laws that he had "no doubt" I had read, when of course he knew I hadn't read them, before admitting he didn't know the law properly himself. It was also very long and detailed for the circumstances. As if, as I say, the author was enjoying the opportunity to make someone feel small. I was in a state of some anxiety, and think from the circumstances it ought to have been obvious that that was at least a possibility.
  • A note for future, I imagine if you had emailed saying 'Oh I'm such a dafty I registered https://www.restlessbeedwood.com instead of https://www.restlessbeadwood.com. is there ANY chance you could fix that for me? I realise how silly I have been' they'd have done it for you, no bother.

Going straight in with 'I know my rights!!' (when you don't) is when goodwill goes out the window and people start being smug and haughty with you...
No, they wouldn't. In buying, you haven't just submitted a request to buy, you've initiated an often realtime straight through process that has registered the domain with the registrar, as well as potentially kicking off DNS entries plus other additional services that may have been requested.

They might, we do 🙂 we’d rather keep people sweet and get a customer for server maintenance, website management etc the cost of a change of domain would be a drop in the ocean compared to potential revs.

Having been on the business end of such conversations, it isn't a case of being smug and haughty - why go out of your way to break rules for someone who's being an idiot to you?

Just parroting the OP's words. I could have replaced with 'not giving you your own way' :)

To be fair to the OP I think they've conducted themselves extremely well in this topic. They've been polite and answered questions put to them, despite not receiving the answers they want. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume they weren't polite to the agent as well.
  • To be fair to the agent, it turns out he was actually trying to be genuinely polite and respectful, and the red highlighting was an accident of the way their messaging system works. See, when you're feeling like an idiot, the brain can do funny things to your perceptions...
  • And, Gavin83, it was answering your question that made me suspect that there was a degree of paranoia involved on my part, so, thank you for that.
