Insurance premiums are based on your post code, breed and age of the animal.

Each company calculates their premiums to their own risk assessment.

The increases each year are based on the running costs of the company and the amount they have paid out in claims.

A company which s cheaper this year may be more expensive next year.

At the end of the day they are in business to make a profit for their shareholders.

You don't say what your premiums are but 30% of £20 per month is very different form 30% of £100 per month.

Personally I have one 14 year old dig insured with Morethan for £28 per month for lifelong cover which I consider cheap. His renewal is due in April and will probably go up again.

I also have another 10 year old with a previous claim for £3000 covered by NCI insurance for £31 per month . But others have had premiums of over £100 per month.

So there is no one size fits all.

Do some quotes on line to compare costs. Just stay away for any underwritten or connected to E&L.
If you want the best then do a quote for Petplan which is an excellent company but is more expensive.
Read the policy document - not the summary- carefully to ensure you know exactly what you are covered for.

Be aware that it is not just previous claims that count, If you have consulted or mentioned something to your vet but no treatment was given that is considered a pre existing condition as is anything that can be connected to it.
