UPS Additional COD Charges

Hi,

Hoping someone can help.

I purchased an item from america last month ~£590. It arrived via UPS who I paid £120 at the door for import charges. Received the item and everything was fine.

Fast forward 1 month, I received a letter from UPS stating that I now owe them an additional £57. Apparently "At the time your shipment was processed only the estimated duty and taxes were available. We have since had the actual import charges confirmed by HMRC customs and this invoice reflects the final confirmation of charges. Please settle the outstanding balance by return within 7 days"

Does anybody know the legality of this? Shouldn't this have been taken into account during the initial invoice? What's the likely course of action if I decide not to pay?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • It’s your charge. It’s your responsibility to pay it, not UPS regardless of when they get the correct figure.

How could they take account of it if they didn't know what the charge would be at the time? Would you have preferred to overpay, say £300, and be given a refund for the extra or only pay the minimum at the time but now have to pay the extra £57?

What did they tell you at the time about charges when they asked for the initial amount? Did it say that was the full balance due or did it say it was an estimate with a final invoice to arrive at a later date? Or would you have rathered they held on to your items until they had the final amount?

Have you checked what the charge should be?
