Sorry, my fault. Should have said that the car has been untouched except for the battery being periodically re-charged.

The car has been parked up for 2 years and the battery was on the car previously for ?? years, a battery should last 5+ years.

It turned over so its not seized.

Most likely fuel has drained back to the tank and you cranked too long and killed the battery.

The electrics all looked OK when I turned the ignition key and the radio worked so I assumed the battery wasn't the problem, but I can check it again if it could still be an issue.
It takes vastly more power to turn an engine over than to power a radio.

If you're only moving it to get access inside the garage pushing it could be the easiest option.

    Dear O Lord.
As has been said "it turned over" so odds on its not seized (and why should it have)
New battery is a must & checked all leads are clean and connected correctly.
    Put nothing into the bores.
    Should start now ?

If so fill the tank with good fuel as fuel does go off, so once running off to the garage for a tank of BP ultimate / Shell V-Max.
  • Issue resolved!

I put the battery charger on again. It showed 'fully charged' after a few minutes but this time I left it on for a good few hours anyway. Then reconnected the battery and tried starting the car and it started first time!!

It looks like the battery naysayers were right. I'll know now to be sceptical about the charger showing the battery as being fully charged, since it obviously wasn't.

Thanks to all those who replied, especially those suggesting a battery problem - that saved me a lot of trouble.
