Sub Titles out of sync

Very noticeable on BBC News this, although it's not confined to the News, but also affects other channels/programmes.

Perfect sync on flipping adverts though!

Just a vent really as I suppose there's nothing I can do about it, and the fact that the adverts sync on the commercial channels, means it's not a TV problem.

I watched the Whitney Houston programme last night and the sub titles lagged behind the speech by quite a few seconds. Today I find that most of the sub titles sync OK.

if its a live broadcast then the subs will be done live as well so you will notice a slight delay.
As adverts are pre recorded the subs will be as well :)

I find on iplayer on TV via ethernet the sound lags behind the picture ever so slightly for whatever reason - you can see their mouths move just before the speech comes out (talking 2-3m from TV here, not enough for the speed of light/sound to come into affect that much :) )

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I can understand the live TV, but why would it happen with a pre-recorded programme?

check if your tv or player has any settings for subtitles, you might be able to adjust the delay settings.
Other than that its down to the programme your watching and how well the subtitles are encoded.

They may not have managed to get the subtitles done in advance so they end up doing them using the 'live broadcast' method as it's going out.

You can usually tell when this is the case because the subtitles appear word-by-word and scroll up instead of complete sentences appearing all at once.

It's the often comical spelling and syntax of subtitles that either amuses or infuriates me.

Mum was staying over Xmas and we had the subtitles on, oh dear....

Quite often the subtitles did not match the actual timing and sometimes the words were just wrong.

Only thing I have seen worse is youtubes subtitles, now thats awful.

I certainly have a great deal of sympathy for profoundly deaf people who have to rely entirely on sub titles.

I only have very slight hearing loss such that in normal day to day life it has no effect whatsoever, but the poor diction and lack of clarity of speech pf some presenters and commentators speech often makes it a struggle to understand what they are saying. Even the BBC News presenters nowadays mumble their way through the telly prompter = that's a thought, show the telly prompter at the bottom of the screen then there would be no need for sub titles!

    I agree!
I have an Aid in each ear, but the mumbles of some TV Talking Heads is bad even with those turned up. Another gripe, is the stupidly loud and often distasteful music that accompanies certain drama and movies on TV.

Yes, the intrusive noise that so often accompanies (usually) documentaries, has meant that on many occasions I have just had to up give up on what would otherwise be programmes worth watching. There is a fortune waiting to be made for a TV manufacturer who comes up with a means of turning off background noise.
