parental control on msn

Does anyone know if I can put parental control on msn? I don't mind my son using it but he does little else and it's affecting his school work. I'd just like to restrict the time he has it open.

  • Assuming that he is using the latest version of MSN Messenger, which is web based and that you are on a router, give his pc a static ip address, then use the the routers features to do the following

Block outbound access to TCP port 1863.
    Block HTTP access to messenger.hotmail.com.
Block HTTP access to webmessenger.msn.com if you also want to block access to MSN Web Messenger

and set it to specific times
  • ^^^your son could easily google a way past this. also ban sites like e messenger myspace and face book. coz ther elike msn. also block all proxy sites. We do pick up a lot trying to get through the school blocks. btw block google transl;ate....
  • yes, obviously it depends on how tech savvy or lazy your son is.

To be honest, the best thing to do is sit him down and talk to him about how it is affecting him and his school work.
  • Or you could block msn n most stuff untill homework is done :D. although you could make a admin and change all the setting with a .bat file
  • block batch files!.
  • I have found the switch is a wonderful way of ensuring h/w gets done! :D

Once upon a time I used to give lectures on being a proper parent but I've got a flat forehead from all the banging of head against wall now so instead I just pander to parents who want to buck pass their responsibilities.

In Microsofts "Live" suite, there's a parental control application. Go to www.windowslive.com and download the free "Family Safety" application there. It allows you to control how much they can go online, what times and what sites they can visit. Oh, and Live Mail and Photo Gallery are worth a look too whilst you're there.
