Leatherjackets in compost
Options
The compost is being made in a recycled wooden crate, slatted wood, measuring about 5 feet x 4 feet. Compost is dropping out of the base on to the ground. Lovely stuff, except that it has small leatherjackets in it - crane fly larvae. They are about half an inch long, and about 20 of them in a bucketful.
Should I try to get rid of them? I've tried spreading the compost out on a large flat tray so the birds could eat the larvae but it isn't really working.
I intend to use some of this compost in a new home made/MSE raised bed, 4ft x 4ft, growing potatoes. Would the leatherjackets do damage? Should I grow onions instead, or some other crop?

Potatoes are regarded as immune.

I don't really worry about these creatures and I've never found them a huge problem. I have enough garden issues without looking for more!0
