Default Date Error on Credit File?

Hi
My wife took out a loan of £21k in 2007 over 5 years, in 2010 we emigrated but left open our bank accounts which continued to pay the loan.
We have now moved back to the UK and cant get a mortgage as it shows the last payment made on the loan was January 2012 leaving a balance £1062. We accept this is an error on our part and have no problems with paying the debt.
The problem we face is that it wasn't recorded as a default by Natwest until August 2015 which means its going to be showing on our file for another 6 years if we satisfy it now.
Can anyone provide any advice?
