What is the minimum you can pay towards a debt

Hello,

Looking for advice on here, can't afford legal advice.
I have 14k of unsecured debt to one company. I dodgy car credit hire company who are charging me this much for 2 months of car hire

What is the minimum I can pay?

I cannot go bankrupt or get a ccj because I work in financial industry.

My current budget
Net salary a month = 1200
Rent for my mums house and other expenses =500
I pay 250 a month to my girlfriend as a spend a couple nights a week at her house.
Fuel - 160 a month
Parking - no where free to park at work so 60 pounds a month
Food, drink and clothes - 200

My girlfriend wants to give me half her house, but I've been putting it off, as I don't want them coming after me and affecting her house she worked hard for.

My aim is to avoid a ccj or anything which will affect my employment

There is no 'legal' minimum.....you need to explai n more how this debt arose.

Is the debt challengeable? £7000 per month sounds high for car hire.

The only way to avoid a ccj completely is to make the contractual payment and that is different for any financial product. If they took legal action against you there is such a thing as a Tomlin Order which holds court action one step short of a ccj.

What the minimum amount is for a 14k debt is hard to say as it's agreed by negotiation. I'd throw £300 per month in as a starting point

So my starting point is to negotiate with them?

Would putting a mortgage in my name change anything? For he worse? My girlfriend wants to put half her house in my name, and a pay half of everything?

The debt arose, as I was in an accident.

My friend and cousin suggested I use an accident management company.

The third party refuse to pay out, and not the credit hire company want money from me.

At the time I was told that I would no have to pay a penny. But it was all a lie and now I have this debt to pay. And and I'm lnvoice of 14k in my name

That's not as easy to do as she thinks it is, and maybe she should take advice on that.

The only difference it would make if you owned a house jointly with her is that it would give the creditor another way to enforce the debt - a ccj followed by a charging order.

I'm still struggling to understand the 14k debt.

Have you got any access to legal advice through work or another insurance product?

Excellent piece of advice. Some insurers have a "general risk" clause which you might be able to use IF there is no other insurance in place. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau may be able to give general advice on the claim options. No point in paying out of there was some form of insurance in place.

Unlike some here, I am not omniscient. If I am wrong correct me. I won't take offence.

I'm still struggling to understand the 14k debt. You did 14k damage to a hire car and were not insured? Or you did 14k damage to a third party and were not insured.

These accident management companies (rip off merchants) make their money by putting accident victims in hire cars at ludicrous rates (£350 per day for something like a Passat) and then try and bill the insurance company for the hire. more and more insurance co's are refusing to pay their rates as they can hire the same car for around £50 per day. The amc then tries to get the money from the victim instead.

There is a current thread in the insurance forum from someone being billed £30k for 2 months hire

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that scam. I won't link to the whole thread as it contains many unhelpful posts but the OP of that thread recently did an update which our OP should read.

    Thanks for this link.

And 3 years and he still hasn't got an invoice. To repay. That is a long time.

I wonder what he has done. It seems from his post he has done nothing, and he has been given advice that he doesn't need to pay as none of these credit hire companies have ever successfully gone to court and won.

Thank you I will have a look.

But my current insurance will not pay towards it. I called and they have confirmed this.
