  • My Moto G4 Play had a 7.1.1 official Android update around August last year that completely trashed the charging of it.

Charging a phone is putting electricity from the mains into the battery to charge up, there is no way a software update can change that. There may be other issues such as battery status being falsely reported or something like that but the OS update didn't break your charging.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

You'd be surprised. On laptops many batteries have circuitry in them to control charging and a firmware update can break that. Most modern phones now have the charging rate controlled by hardware which in turn means software is involved in order to prolong battery lifespan.

    Oh yes it did.......
Try searching on Google & you will see that it is a recognised problem with NO fix.

Yes it most certainly can. Been there before with an android phone myself. After an awful lot of work I managed to revert back to a previous operating system to resolve the issue.

I attempted to do that but it got a bit complicated for me bootloaders & all that.
Had to buy a new phone in the end.

Yes it felt like I needed a doctorate in IT just to follow the instructions. If it happens again I will be buying a new phone, not worth the hassle again.
